Website for Seattle Artist
The Challenge
Seattle-based artist Kathy Roseth needed a digital home that would do justice to her diverse body of work spanning landscapes, portraits, etchings, and still lifes. The portfolio website had to strike a delicate balance: sophisticated enough to reflect her professional caliber while staying visually restrained so the artwork remained the star.
Design Approach
The design philosophy centered on one principle: let the art breathe. I selected a neutral background palette paired with subtle canvas textures that echoed the tactile quality of Roseth’s paintings without competing for attention. This created an environment where visitors could engage with each piece on its own terms.
The minimalist approach extended to the site architecture and navigation, ensuring users could move fluidly between different categories of work without visual clutter or unnecessary friction.
Process & Deliverables
The project moved through a structured design process:
Planning & Architecture
I developed comprehensive wireframes mapping out the user journey across key pages: homepage, portfolio galleries, individual artwork displays, and artist biography. These blueprints established the clean, intuitive structure that would guide the final design.
- Wireframe of Home Page
- Wireframe of Portfolio Gallery
- Wireframe of Artwork Page
- Wireframe of About Page
Visual Exploration
Three distinct design directions were presented to the client, each interpreting the “neutral showcase” concept differently while maintaining focus on the artwork. This collaborative exploration helped refine the visual direction before committing to full development.
- Design Alternative #1
- Design Alternative #2
- Design Alternative #3
Custom WordPress Implementation
The final design was built as a custom WordPress theme, giving Roseth the flexibility to update her portfolio independently as she creates new work. The content management system was configured specifically for visual artists, making it straightforward to add new pieces, organize galleries, and maintain the site over time.
Outcome
KathyRoseth.com successfully positions the artist’s work in a professional, gallery-like digital space. The restrained design framework allows each painting, etching, and portrait to command attention while the custom CMS empowers the artist to maintain creative control over her online presence.
